Are all rescues created equally?
Unfortunately, the answer is NO...
BUT! Ethically organized and functioning rescues DO exist. That said, why do adoption fees range from $50 - $1,000?
Rescues, in general, are volunteer based organizations.
However, the expenses add up FAST:
Veterinary Wellness Exams
Spay/Neuter surgeries
Microchipping
Vaccinations
Heartworm Testing
Deworming
Medications
Specialty Surgeries
Professional Behavioral Assistance
If adoption fees are FREE then it's HIGHLY likely that your rescue pet isn’t receiving medical care. Medical care is vital to lowering the pet population, controlling diseases, and keeping our communities safe.
Now, let me speak from experience. My husband and I personally foster for an amazing local rescue. We currently have (2) fosters and both have extreme behavioral issues. In turn the rescue has to obtain assistance from a Professional Behaviorist. Their adoption fees will NEVER fully cover these expenses. But, the rescue wants to do everything they can to help them both. THIS is an ethically organized and functioning rescue who is doing everything they can to help rehabilitate these babies.
What should you receive when you pay your Adoption Fee?
The answer is a fully vetted, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped rescue. Does this mean that your new family member won’t have behavioral issues? No. But, most of the time all they want is love, affection, and attention….which is worth any price in my book!
